As a small business owner, you wear a lot of hats. Some days, you’re the CEO, accountant, marketer, and IT department all rolled into one. While this juggling act can be exciting, it’s also exhausting—and often leaves self-care at the bottom of the priority list.
I know this firsthand. My recent trip to Costa Rica was supposed to be a “vacation,” but it became something much bigger. It became a reset—a chance to take a step back, recharge, and realize how far off track my self-care had drifted. Back home, I was relying on Band-Aid fixes like caffeine and sugar to power through my days. But in Costa Rica, surrounded by clean air, fresh food, and a slower pace, I was reminded of what wellness really feels like.
The Problem: Band-Aid Fixes Won’t Fix the Burnout
Let’s be real: as business owners, we often rely on quick fixes to “get by.” Another cup of coffee to push through that afternoon slump. A sugary snack to feel like you have energy at 3 PM. But these habits come at a cost—they leave us feeling burned out, frazzled, and running on fumes.
It’s not just about how these choices affect your body. It’s also about the mental toll they take. You start to feel like you’re constantly putting out fires, rather than building something sustainable and joyful.
That’s where intentional self-care comes in. These five practices are my non-negotiables—small but mighty habits that help me feel grounded, focused, and ready to tackle whatever comes my way.
1. Daily Movement: Stay Grounded

Whether it’s yoga, a brisk walk, or Qigong, moving your body daily can work wonders for your energy and focus.
During my trip, I hiked miles through the lush Costa Rican rainforest, and it felt incredible. Back home, I’ve found that even 10 minutes of morning yoga can set the tone for a productive day. It’s not about perfection—it’s about consistency.
💡 Action Step: Schedule 10-15 minutes of movement into your day. Treat it like a non-negotiable meeting with yourself.
2. Mindful Eating: Fuel Your Body

At home, my diet had turned into a caffeine-and-sugar-fueled survival strategy. But in Costa Rica, I rediscovered the power of clean, whole foods and even embraced fasting.
Mindful eating isn’t about restriction—it’s about choosing foods that nourish your body and mind. Start small: swap processed snacks for fresh fruit, or try skipping breakfast one day a week to let your body rest and reset.
💡 Action Step: Plan one clean, balanced meal this week. Notice how you feel afterward—lighter, clearer, and more focused.
3. Mental Clarity Practices: De-Stress

Running a business is stressful, and it’s easy to carry that stress around without realizing it. Practices like meditation, journaling, or even deep breathing can help you create mental space and clarity.
One of my favorite moments in Costa Rica was sitting quietly in a hammock, listening to the sounds of the rainforest. Back home, I’ve recreated that experience by dedicating 10 minutes each morning to meditation. It’s amazing how much calmer I feel when I start the day intentionally.
💡 Action Step: Pick one mental clarity practice—whether it’s journaling, meditation, or even doing the dishes—and commit to it daily for a week.
4. Hydration and Detox: Drink to Your Health

Dehydration is sneaky—it can leave you feeling sluggish and unfocused without realizing why. Drinking enough water is one of the simplest yet most powerful self-care habits you can adopt.
In Costa Rica, I drank water infused with fresh fruit and herbs, and it was a game-changer. Now, I keep a reusable water bottle on hand and aim to drink at least eight glasses a day.
💡 Action Step: Start your day with a glass of water before reaching for coffee or tea. Bonus points if you add a squeeze of lemon for a gentle detox.
5. Prioritize Sleep: Your Ultimate Recharge

Sleep is the foundation of all health and productivity. Without it, even the best intentions can crumble.
On my trip, I realized just how much my irregular sleep patterns were affecting me. Now, I’m committed to winding down earlier, creating a calming bedtime routine, and aiming for 7-8 hours of quality rest each night.
💡 Action Step: Set an alarm for bedtime (yes, bedtime!) and stick to it. Treat sleep like the essential recharge it is.
Conclusion: Start Small, Stay Consistent
It’s easy to let self-care fall by the wayside when you’re busy running a business. But here’s the truth: taking care of yourself isn’t just good for you—it’s good for your business.
You don’t need to overhaul your entire routine overnight. Start with one or two of these practices and build from there. Even small changes can lead to big shifts in how you feel and perform.
