When I worked in downtown Calgary, inspiration was everywhere. Between the commute, vibrant inner-city shops, making videos in the park, lunchtime volunteering for Healing Touch, and countless work meetings and events, my life was bustling! There was always something to write about.
Fast forward to today’s work-from-home lifestyle, and that steady flow of fresh energy has dried up.
Sure, working in your PJs, setting your own hours, and saving money on takeout is great—but let’s be honest, it can get… boring. You find yourself talking to the walls (or, in my case, ChatGPT), suspiciously screening every call that’s probably spam anyway.
So what happens when your creative well runs dry? How do you create exciting content when your day-to-day feels like Groundhog Day?
I recently traveled to Costa Rica, and while that trip gave me a major dose of inspiration, it also taught me lessons you can apply without going on an exotic vacation.
1. Plan Mini Adventures
There are countless new experiences waiting just outside your door—you just have to seek them out!
For example, my son’s homeschooling organization, Wisdom, organizes amazing events for all ages. Last year, we drove from Calgary to Rocky Mountain House for a special “Métis Welcome.”

For the price of a tank of gas, a large coffee, and putting our trust in Google Maps, we set off on an adventure through stunning countryside I didn’t even know existed so close to home. The experience was unforgettable—and it sparked content ideas I never would have thought of sitting at my desk.
Lesson: Adventure doesn’t have to be expensive or far away. It just requires a little planning and a willingness to say yes.
2. Take Intentional Breaks to Recharge
Picture this: I’m lying in a hammock in Costa Rica, surrounded by the soothing sounds of the rainforest.

It was magical. But it also made me realize that I don’t need a rainforest—or even a hammock—to feel recharged. I have a beautiful meditation space at home that I carefully designed and adored… until it started gathering dust.
Why? Because life happens. Kids yell, dinner needs cooking, emails pile up, and before you know it, your inner peace sanctuary becomes the first thing to get tossed out the window.
Here’s your reminder: “Hammock time” is non-negotiable. Whether it’s five minutes or an hour, create space in your day to unplug and refuel. Make it a habit. Guard it like the treasure it is.
Lesson: Creativity thrives on rest. Prioritize it, or you’ll burn out faster than your morning coffee cools.
3. Capture Your Inspiration with an Ideas Stash
Once you’ve reignited your creative spark, the next step is capturing those ideas before they vanish. Inspiration has a funny way of disappearing as quickly as it comes, so having a system in place is crucial.
That’s where my Ideas Stash comes in—a cornerstone of my Magical Marketing System™.
Here’s how to set one up:
- Create a digital system: Use folders, documents, or apps with simple, intuitive naming conventions.
- Add a physical component: If you’re into Bullet Journaling like me, combine paper and digital tools to funnel ideas seamlessly.
- Keep it scalable: Your system should be easy to use and grow with you. If it feels like a chore, you’ll avoid it—and that defeats the point.
When your Ideas Stash is ready, you’ll always have a place to capture those fleeting moments of brilliance, making content creation a breeze.
Summary
Finding inspiration for content marketing doesn’t require a plane ticket to paradise (though that’s always nice!).
Start by shaking up your routine with mini adventures—even close to home. Make intentional breaks a priority to recharge your creative energy. And finally, set up an Ideas Stash so you can capture inspiration the moment it strikes.
Once you’ve got these steps in place, your creative tap will flow effortlessly. And if you’re feeling overwhelmed with the execution? Hire a VA or admin to help get your ideas published consistently and professionally.
The magic is already within you—you just need the right tools to let it shine.
