It’s that time of year again—the spooky celebration where anything goes, and the more creatively terrifying, the better!
But what happens when October 31st becomes a chore instead of a delight and you find yourself just going through the motions…? When this happens, it’s time to reinvent.
Thinking back to my own childhood, Halloween night was a surreal dream: You mean we get to dress up as anything we want, wander from house to house, and collect candy? It was both strange and exciting!
I was lucky to have a mom who was a brilliant seamstress, so I always wore the most elaborate costumes—no plastic masks or off-the-rack outfits for me. Back in the ’70s and ’80s, we’d don our costumes for school, compete in contests, and parade around to showcase our outfits. It was great fun.
Here’s a few photos of the beautiful handmade costumes my mom created for me:
Fast-forward to today, and Halloween has changed. Costumes are algorithm-approved, with most kids dressed as Scream faces, Disney Princesses, superheroes, or other media stars. And beyond the costumes, the holiday itself feels culture-driven and commercialized, more about profits and accepted norms than the mischievous fun we once knew.
But here’s the thing:
When something starts feeling like a chore—whether it’s Halloween or your business’s brand—that’s your cue to pause and reinvent it in a way that brings back the joy and authenticity.
This week, I’m exploring how to bring back the magic to both Halloween and your brand.
Craft a Halloween (and Brand) That Feels Uniquely Yours

Let’s dive into how to transform both Halloween and your brand into experiences that truly align with what you love. Here are my top three tips for the art of reinvention.
1. First, Gauge Your Level of Commitment
If Halloween has lost its magic, it’s time to explore why. Start by considering:
- Am I fully committed to reinventing this holiday?
- What does it mean to me now?
- What made it special to begin with?
Take a moment to ask: Do I want to keep celebrating Halloween, and if so, why?
Reflecting on your current feelings and motives brings clarity to what you genuinely love about it, as well as the elements that truly resonate with you today.
One way to uncover this is to think back to a recent Halloween moment that filled you with joy. Write it down, capturing all the tiny details—what made it memorable? Would you want to relive it?
For example, over the past ten years, I’ve been offering free one-card tarot readings every Halloween. The surge of “Yes, please, pick me!” responses on Facebook generated loads of engagement and brought new clients to my tarot business. It was magical, perfectly timed and so much fun to do! I get all warm and fuzzy recalling this heartwarming memory and the good vibes that were shared between me, my connections and my business.
In branding, this reflection is just as important. Regularly reconnect with your original vision for your business. Ask yourself, Is the magic still there? Does your brand still feel like a true expression of your essence, purpose, and mission? If not, acknowledging this is the first step to realigning your brand and updating it with who you are and what matters most to you right now.
Once you’re committed to the reinvention process, you’re ready for Step Two.
2. Ditch What Drains You

Even if your motivation for Halloween (or branding) is influenced by external factors—like keeping your kids happy or running a festive business campaign—you still have the power to take control of how you execute. Start by identifying and ditching the elements that feel more like obligations than enjoyment.
Here’s a quick rundown of Halloween traditions that can feel more corporate-driven than celebratory: endless candy and the risk of sugar overload, spooky costumes that are a little too realistic (hello, nightmares!), cheaply-made, mass-produced costumes that look identical year after year. And don’t even get me started on the “trick” part of trick-or-treating. Not every house wants to play by these rules!
The takeaway? You don’t have to do Halloween—or your branding—the way everyone else does. If you’d prefer to opt out of certain traditions, do it! Choose alternatives that feel intentional: research a local Halloween event, or host a party that reflects what you enjoy about the holiday.
In branding, the same principle applies. It can feel easier to keep things as they are, but that often means holding onto elements that no longer fit your vision. Reflect on what parts of your brand might be weighing you down. Have you been sticking with outdated design choices, or using messaging that no longer aligns with your values? Now’s the time for a purge!
This is your chance to clear out the clutter—making space for what truly aligns with your brand and purpose.
3. Craft Your New Vision

Now that you’ve recommitted and cleared out what doesn’t serve you, it’s time to get creative with a fresh vision for Halloween—and your business’s brand! Aim to consciously create a celebration or event you genuinely look forward to, one that reflects your values and brings authentic joy.
Kids can sense when we’re not fully present, so make this Halloween a special memory they’ll cherish. Shift the focus from merely ticking boxes to immersing yourself in the magic of the night.
Up until now, I’ve been approaching costume shopping with my son half-heartedly. As I’m writing down these words, I feel slightly guilty about my lack of enthusiasm. When I pause to see Halloween through Damian’s eyes—his boundless excitement, his thrill over every new discovery—it changes everything. Instead of asking, “What’s in this for me?” the question becomes, “What can I create for him?” Leaning into his perspective shifts the whole evening from an obligation to an adventure. Is it possible I can enjoy every minute?
And it’s the same with branding. Start by asking yourself, “What’s in it for my clients, followers, or audience?” and use that as a compass. When you put others at the heart of your vision, you’re not only designing a brand experience they’re going to love—you’re also setting up something you’ll be genuinely excited about.
In giving, we find the deepest fulfillment and reward.
Setting a new vision is about being true to your values and putting your unique spin on things—so it brings joy to everyone involved, including you.
Through Regular Reflection and Intention, We Find Fulfillment

When you feel that “niggly” sense that something isn’t quite right, don’t brush it aside. Halloween is one of those ancient customs where the origins have almost faded, replaced by a culture-driven agenda. That’s the perfect cue to pause and reimagine the holiday—and make it yours again.
Our seasonal calendar seems designed to pull us from one profit-driven holiday to the next. It’s perfectly natural to want off that treadmill and to long for traditions that reflect our values and the joy of simpler times.
The same applies to our business branding. Over time, a logo, colors, fonts, and taglines can feel like just things we “threw together.” But revisiting these choices, reconnecting with the essence of what we do, and aligning our brand with who we are now doesn’t just revitalize our brand—it makes it magnetic. When you’re genuinely aligned with and excited about your business brand, it sells itself.
So what are your thoughts on Halloween?
And, more importantly, how do you feel about your business’s brand?
Let’s talk!
